Singapore Poly students’ invention thwart mobile phone thieves
By Jason Tan, Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE : Singapore Polytechnic students have found a new way to thwart mobile phone thieves.
They can steal it but they cannot use it.
A group of final-year Singapore Polytechnic students has devised a way to stop thieves from using stolen mobile phones.
Their invention can get the phone locked to prevent it from being used once it is stolen.
Ali Razeen, Student at Singapore Polytechnic, said: “We actually place a programme in the hand-phone itself. So in case the hand-phone is stolen we can lock the hand-phone, meaning the hand-phone will not function no matter what combination of keys you enter.”
The young inventors have also come up with a way to make the roads safer.
The Talking SMS is another invention by the students. This programme reads out incoming messages on smart-phones.
These are phones that provide more than just voice features - users can also read email and surf the net on such phones.
Daniel Yap Wei Qiang, Student at Singapore Polytechnic, said: “I see drivers reading SMS while they are driving which is quite dangerous to the passengers. So this application will help them to read out the SMS and reduce the threat of getting accidents.”
Now the only thing left to do is find a way for mobile phone users to reply to these messages without having to punch in the keys.
Students of the polytechnic are hoping to get patents for their inventions and make them available to the public in the future. - CNA/de
